Tree Advice For Fall

To make sure your trees are well prepared to withstand the challenges ahead this winter, take measures now to fortify your trees against the elements that lie ahead.

Reduce End-Weight Through Pruning

While much-needed rain helped our trees thrive during the growing season, it may have led to increased end weight—the accumulation of foliage, branches and water weight at the outer edge of the tree limbs. This makes them vulnerable to limb breaks or uprooting during severe storms.

Proper pruning techniques, when performed by a certified arborist, can create a well-balanced canopy, redistributing weight evenly throughout the tree. By selectively removing deadwood, crossing branches and crowded foliage, you can reduce the chances of branch failure and ensure better tree health. Avoid the practice of over-pruning or removing too much green foliage out of the canopy.
Fertilize
Inadequate soil conditions make it difficult for trees to grow and withstand stressors including insects, disease, and challenging weather. Add specially formulated fertilization now and into fall to trees of all sizes. This dramatically improves growing conditions and provides the nutrients required for optimal health and vital tree root development.
Other winter storm preparation tips:

  • Deep water irrigation for large trees helps nourish tree root systems without causing excessive top growth.
  • Add mulch to the base of trees, even small ones, to conserves soil moisture and regulate temperature.
  • Inspect trees for signs of pests, disease or structural issues.
  • Consider implementing cabling and branch support systems to reinforce weak branches and to minimize snapping.
  • Be proactive; take care of your trees now.
  • Be sure to consult with a certified arborist to help you keep your trees healthy.
