Keep the critical zone around your tree native.
- Do NOT water in the dry summer months. Water + warmth = oak root fungus.
- Remove paving, river rocks, and competing plants, especially ivy and lawn turf.
- Keep cars off this area. Compacted soil is bad for all trees. Talk to your arborist about aerating the ground beneath your oaks.
- Let fallen leaves remain in place as a natural fertilizer
- Do NOT raise the soil level
Extend the native area if you can.
- Plant native and drought tolerant herbaceous plant/shrubs 10 feet farther from the trunk of the tree.
If pruning is required, prune conservatively; it can’t be undone.
Have your trees inspected by an ISA Certified Arborist every year.
